Arbour Vale School - Living For Sport
LIVING FOR SPORT TAKES GOLD AT ARBOUR VALE SCHOOL

Sky Living For Sport aims to use the power of sport to engage, motivate and inspire young people to reach their full potential.

Developed in partnership with BSkyB and supported by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF), Sky Living For Sport targets young people, who are at risk of opting out of school life, whether through poor attendance or lack of confidence.

Sky Living For Sport uses the spirit of adventure, creativity and commitment that sport can generate to inspire young people and help them to improve attitude and behaviour.

Sky Living For Sport was launched on 16 September 2003.  It has now reached more than 500 schools across England, Northern Ireland and Scotland.

Arbour Vale was one of the first schools to take on The Living for Sport Programme back in 2003 during it’s Pilot year. Pupils were hand picked to attend the course either because of their low attendance levels or overall attitude to school.

Throughout our 5 years of running the course we have won numerous awards which range from “Young Achiever Award” to “Buddy Award” to “Teacher of the Year – Highly Commended”. The course is now embedded into the Curriculum and runs as a sole subject on a Friday afternoon. It also enhances and benefits our current curriculum with its cross curricular links with Literacy, Numeracy, ICT and PSHE.

This year we have worked closely with Dorney Lake and taken the pupils out rowing. Not only has it made them work hard as a team, but has also increased their confidence levels.

Living for Sport will continue to be a success and with the Olympics in London in 2012 we’ve certainly already won our GOLD MEDAL with this project!
