Multi- Sensory Facilities

There  are four multi-sensory environments within the school – and each has been designed for a specific purpose to meet the broad age and ability range within the school. Used effectively the facilities provide an enhanced learning environment that enables us to personalise the curriculum and maximise learning opportunities for all pupils.

Sensory Theatre
This large space is designed  as a studio to use with whole class groups or groups of pupils with the focus being on a single activity enhanced by planned use of multi-sensory input.
Example:
Experience of the Blitz would involve:
• Use of darkened and limited space
• Sound effects  ( intense periods of noise and total silence) from the audio equipment
• Dramatic and unexpected changes in lighting using light effects
• Images of overhead lights/ planes in silhouette projected on to back wall or white curtain.
• Use of costume / props etc

The experience , depending on the age and ability of the group could be experiential learning, enactment of knowledge gained through history  and a stimulus for creative writing / art etc.

We are going on a Bear Hunt
• Use of wind machine for grass swishing
• Use of water spray and blue lights for river
• White curtains / projector effect for snow
• Darkened section for the cave
• Sound effects for the bear

The purpose of this room is targeted activities for individual pupils.  It offers experiences related to cause and effect through the use of switches;  light ;  and UV light;
Sessions in this room are likely to be shorter in duration depending on the range of activities planned and the attention span of the pupils involved.

Soft Play Room
The room has been designed to accommodate the full age range of pupils at the school.
Activities need to be planned based on the age , ability and purpose of the session.
Examples include:
• Short bursts of planned physical activity

• Development of interaction / turn taking

White Room

Sensory Trolley
This is available for use in classrooms and offers a highly flexible and personalised approach  to multi-sensory activities.
It can also be used in conjunction with equipment available in the Sensory Theatre
